The Tank Stream Hotel project was awarded its Practical Completion Certificate at the end of last week, bringing to a close the highly successful 16-month construction phase.
Probuild commenced works on Tank Stream for Cititel Hotels in February 2014. The development is a combination of refurbishment and new-build, with the final product comprising a 281-room 4-star hotel, a restaurant, café and retail tenancy.
The existing 10-storey building, located at the centre of Sydney's core business district, was erected in the 1960s and features external Wombeyan marble face façade which has been listed by the RAIA as Historically Significant to Sydney's Distinctive Facades for 20th Century Architecture.
Works included the detailed demolition throughout the existing structure and the removal of major plant from the roof top. An additional four levels were constructed requiring the insertion and cantilevering of the new structure above the existing building.
Careful preservation and enhancement to the façade includes the incorporation of glass scalloped curtain wall screens to assist in directing natural light to the building which is shaded by the Australia Square Tower in the afternoon.
The Tank Stream Hotel demonstrates Probuild's expertise and experience in the delivery of projects constructed in this central and active CBD location under the constraints of congested site conditions, significant traffic and pedestrian management and heritage considerations.
Collaborative stakeholder management beyond the international client and consultant team included neighbouring hotels, Australia Square (one of Sydney's most thriving business centres), the City of Sydney council, Roads and Maritime Services, services authorities and the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union.
At the peak of construction, the site accommodated a 170-strong workforce demonstrating Probuild's commitment to the delivery of Cititel Hotel's time, quality and budget objectives.
