Last week, Probuild received international recognition for our Building Safety Greatness program. We were announced winners in the innovation category, Game Changer, at this year’s Institute of Internal Communications (IoIC) UK awards. BSG was certainly a game changer for us at Probuild. We were bold in our approach, working with expert communicators to uncover the driving emotions that engage people to adopt safer work behaviours. These driving emotions, Care, Courage and Pride, became the foundations of our program - leading to a 20% reduction in both incident and injury frequency rates.
Frontline leaders across our business were trained in what these behaviours mean, how we can have conversations around these drivers and how best to utilise them to influence health and safety outcomes.
Following this, a series of campaigns and improved processes were created to engage our workforce – made up of five different generations, that’s 5000 people in four different states, focusing on various elements of health and safety; from operational high risks, risk management and incident investigation to family life and mental health.
What did BSG result in for Probuild?
Over the past 12 months we refined our approach to risk management, resulting in an increase in the number if HSE risk workshops being conducted, involving our project teams and subcontractors conducting the high-risk activities.
HSE interactions by Senior Management aligned with and now focus our operational key risk and high-risk areas. New approaches to discussing operational risks, for example our falling objects campaign, and the no harm in asking campaign, have assisted in the decline of workplace incidents and injuries, with a with a 20% reduction in both incident and injury frequency rates. What is important to note about this, is that the combination of practical systems and engaging conversations we have been able to have a significant company wide.
We know that safety never stops. We’ll continue to push the boundaries and think innovatively to build safety greatness - always striving for better.
The senior leaders of the business have committed their time and their efforts with the HSE team. Now our People and Culture Team is creating a new approach to onboarding with a much greater emphasis on Health and Safety and to the development of new approaches to how we delivery training around our high-risk activities.
