What's it like to build a construction business from the ground up, give it your all for close to three decades, and then hand over the reins to your successor?
"Bloody hard," laughs Probuild founder Phil Mehrten, in his trophy-lined family office in Melbourne's Bayside area.
"It's very difficult. But if you have the mindset when you're doing it that you do whatever's best for the company and not necessarily best for you … you've got to do what's best for the business."
The construction group Mehrten built and more recently stepped down from is this year celebrating its 30th anniversary, with a national project pipeline of $5 billion and annual revenue of $2bn.
