Around 2,200 tonnes of steel has been installed at MECE to date, with a further 800 tonnes still to be installed. The construction team will typically install around 80 tonnes of steel during any given week, however, installation can reach more than 150 tonnes; an impressive feat.
The steel trusses used in the main hall span 84m and weigh around 80 tonnes each. These are brought to site in pieces given their weight and size, and assembled on the ground. A mobile crane then moves the trusses into their final position and the steel fabrication team fixes them to the main structure.
Around 700 jobs have been or will be created during the build: from steel fabricators to carpenters. We’re proud to employ local sub-contractors and provide benefits to the local economy.
