The Empire site team competed in Moomba’s Birdman Rally, a competition for homemade gliders, hang gliders and human powered aircraft to raise money for the RSPCA.
The weather stepped up on the day, bringing a bigger crowd to Moomba’s Birdman Rally than ever, with more than 80,000 spectators in attendance.
Whilst the team’s flying efforts were not as great as anticipated the fundraising efforts exceeded all expectations with over 30 subcontractors donating materials and money. A total of $21,250.80 was raised for the RSPCA.
This money raised will help rehabilitate over 300 animals to get them ready for adoption. In addition, the donation will aid them in the renovation of their dog adoption facilities. This will greatly improve the quality of the puppies and dog's lives before adoption, as well as create a more inviting space or potential adopters.
On the day of the event, the potentially over-engineered glider caught too much wind and whilst many say it went backwards, we managed to fly 4m from the podium. This distance combined with our fundraising contributions put our final distance at 212m.
This amazing effort, allowed the team to take the silver medal.
We cannot thank everyone enough for the support. Without your help the event wouldn’t have been as much of a success.
